Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My caseload is made up of thirty wonderful students in grades kindergarten through fifth. The students I work with come from very diverse backgrounds with many different cultures represented. About 90% of the students are English language learners and speak a different language at home. Communication is a foundation for daily life; however, many of my students lack the basic skills to express themselves and find daily academic and social task challenging. Due to the fact that a significant amount of my students are learning English as a second language, often they lack the basic sound-letter correspondence, do not have basic reading skills, have a limited vocabulary and struggle to comprehend information. Additionally, a significant number of the students come from low income households. My students work hard everyday and I am constantly looking for new ways to get them engaged in lessons and expose them to new experiences!

My Project

I am requesting additional Recipe for Reading materials in order to help my students advance their reading skills. A significant number of my students lack basic sound-letter correspondence and do not have grade level reading skills. Some of them have this difficulty because they have language, intellectual and learning disabilities and some are English Language Learners. However, it is critical that they enhance their ability because reading is very important inside and outside of the school environment. About 7 months ago I was trained in the Recipe for Reading program. I have been using it with my students in order to get them reading at the highest level they are capable of. Over the past 7 months I have seen major growth in their skills. One student went from reading at a level C to reading at a level M, which was almost on grade level!

I am so happy with my students growth and now I find myself needing the higher level materials that go with the Recipe for Reading program!

This program focuses on letter sounds, blending and writing words and phrases. It also has workbooks and readers focused on the target letter. My students are always so proud of themselves when they are able to read the reader focused on the sounds they are working on independently. Using this program, I am able to develop interactive and engaging ways to enhance reading skills, which help them succeed in the classroom and in their everyday life.
