My Students

My grandmother always said "eat it, you'll love it" when she wanted us to try new things at the dinner table. We're cooking in our classroom and the motto is the same as we work on trying new things. Help us get the supplies we need to increase our menu...and our learning!

The students in my class are an amazing group of 3-5 year olds.

My classroom is blended, meaning I have some children with disabilities and some children who are typically developing. Our needs are different and our abilities are different. But our love of cooking together is the same! My kids love to read recipes when we begin cooking activities and are starting to have more of an understanding of basic measurement. The minute I get out the recipe poster, their eyes light up and their hands shoot into the sky with questions about what we're making that day. My kids come from the largest, oldest, and poorest housing development in our city. For many of our families, food is something that they work very hard to secure each and every day. For many of my students, cooking or making dinner for themselves or their siblings is also a necessity. Learning safe and healthy cooking skills are important for all children. But they are especially important for this awesome group of little ones.

My Project

Having these supplies will equip our classroom for hands-on learning through cooking. A refrigerator means we will be able to store various supplies prior to cooking (or to keep them cool prior to enjoying our creations). A microwave means we will be able to melt ingredients together or cook various items completely in our classroom. We will have the bowls and utensils on hand to measure our ingredients. These opportunities are vitally important for my students. If my children are able to learn safe, healthy cooking skills at a young age they will be better prepared to care for themselves, or others, safely. We will have more opportunities to practice skills that they can carry back to their home. We will also be practicing and reinforcing skills we are learning during other times of the day.

Cooking gives us opportunities for hands-on experiences with math, science, home living, health, and literacy.

Cooking also brings us together as a class to work on a concentrated project. But most of all, cooking allows us to succeed together and then enjoy our success together.
