The readers of today are the leaders of tomorrow!

My students need exposure to more nonfiction text and Scholastic News magazine is an excellent way for them to learn about current events and engage in this type of text in a fun, interesting way.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students start the day by reciting the five school values, which drive student and teacher motivation. One of those values states,"We believe that each of us can learn and that in school we grow to become all that we can be". Another value of the utmost importance is, "We believe that going to school is the most important thing we could do right now". The Common Core standards encourage students to be exposed to all literature and places a heavy emphasis on nonfiction text.

Within my classroom, there is a short supply of nonfiction text and I would like to provide more exposure to this type of literature on a more frequent basis.

Nonfiction texts help develop research and analytical skills, which I feel will be in high demand in the workplace of tomorrow.

My Project

Even though we live in a metropolitan city, many of my students do not get the opportunities and destinations available to them. Yet most of my students are limited to their local neighborhood. I feel that having access to Scholastic News magazine on a regular basis will have them become global citizens, who are aware of the world around them and feel they can one day have an impact and make a difference. The plan is for these magazines to be taken home for students to read. Access to a computer with internet access is slim for my young learners.
