Students are fortunate to be learning in a time where classrooms are diverse, but it is more important than ever for students to understand the challenges faced during the post-Civil War Era, primarily as experienced by freed slaves.
Using the books Belle the Lat Mule at Gee's Bend, and The Quilts of Gee's Bend, I will be introducing my students to the quilt-making tradition that began in Gee's Bend, Alabama and that became well known during the Civil Rights Era.
Students will study the significance of quilts, the history of the quilt-making tradition, and their relevance during the 1960s in Gee's Bend, Alabama.
Students will then be able to create their own quilts made of felt pieces and use needle and thread to hand stitch together the pieces.
