Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

When I started teaching four years ago, I used to request that each child bring in all of the supplies on a list I sent home. Now that I work at a high-poverty school where 88% of the students qualify for free lunches, I know it's difficult for families to provide a range of school supplies. My students use communal supplies in my classroom, which means they share pencils, lined paper, sticky notes, art supplies, etc. Communal supplies save time since students don't roam around asking, "May I borrow your _____?" This system reduces distractions since materials are stored in a classroom corner not in students' desks. Additionally, communal supplies helps students become better sharers since everything belongs to the classroom community. Finally, knowing we have a shared cache of supplies in the classroom closet provides a sense of security to all of my students since they know they will have whatever tools they need for their work without worrying about what their family can or cannot provide. I need your help to make sure all of my new students can start school with the new supplies they will need to succeed. Having two-pocket folders, new pens, real writer's notebooks and other tools will help them be productive and prepared from the very first moment they set foot inside my classroom. Remember what it felt like to start the new school year with a new notebook, a fresh pencil box, a special notebook and a new sense of excitement for what new adventures lie ahead at school? Help me even the playing field by giving my students the tools they need for success. Thank you, in advance, for your generosity.
