Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in central urban Houston. The school was opened this year on September 25, 2017 due to extensive damage to the school and the surrounding neighborhood by Hurricane Harvey. The school's population is approximately 1,700 students with 88% of the students identified as economically disadvantaged. The majority of students have parents with no post secondary education. The mission of NHS is to create and environment where students, teachers, staff, parents and community work together to enhance academic, social, physical and emotional development for all of the students that we serve.

My Project

Wrestling is a year round sport. Because of Hurricane Harvey, we started school late and we are unable to raise the funds through private fundraising that are needed for basic equipment.

I started the wrestling team because this sport is inclusive of all students and I allow anyone to join if the they choose.

Even though the season has started and we practice daily, we are not allowed to participate because we don't have the necessary protection equipment necessary to compete in matches. The hurricane has taxed the time and resources of the athletics department and wrestling is the last sport that will receive equipment.
