I teach English to 10th graders at a public high school in Central New York. Approximately 50% of the students here receive free or reduced lunches and about 10% speak a language other than English at home. A majority of the students I teach are good thinkers and college bound, but they struggle with language and getting their ideas down on paper.

To help students learn the power of words, the English Department is working diligently to help students study words, their origins, and their correct usage. The students are already excited and are about to study prefixes and suffixes, homophones, and synonyms and antonyms. This is a difficult task to complete successfully without proper materials. The students in my classroom are currently sharing ten dictionaries that were published more than 30 years ago, so you can imagine the condition they are in. While money is provided for some classroom supplies, there isn't money available for dictionaries and thesauri this year.

To engage my students and continue to keep them interested in learning about words and how to use them correctly, they need dictionaries and thesauri that they can easily reach for when in need and not have to share with the other students. Being able to look up definitions will help when reading new texts, and using a thesaurus will give them the opportunity to discover synonyms and antonyms that will make their writing more vibrant and original. Learning about words and how to use them effectively is a necessity for my college-bound students. A class set of Webster’s New World Dictionary and Thesauri will be a beneficial resource for my group of sophomores because it is a newer version that includes many 21st Century words such as dot.com and home page.

Your help will make it possible for my students to realize the power of words and how to use them successfully. This knowledge will assist them when reading new works of literature and will improve their writing in preparation for college.
