My Students

One of my favorite teaching quotes is "If a child can't learn the way you teach, maybe you should teach the way he learns." My students struggle with reading, but coupling a text with audio and visual resources gets them excited about reading and plays to their learning style strengths.

My students are 11th and 12th grade students who reside in Manhattan.

Our school is also located in Manhattan and is a public charter school that follows a full inclusion model. Approximately half of my students have special needs, which range from cognitive processing issues to emotional disturbance. Despite their learning disabilities and struggles in school, my students want to be successful and because of their hard work and determination, many are on track to graduate and attend college.

My Project

With speakers and audio books, I will be able to enhance the reading experience for my students who are auditory learners. In the past, I have seen my students' interest in reading increase dramatically when I use audio and visuals to supplement the experience. An interest in reading is the key to improving my students' literacy skills and broadening their background knowledge.

Many of my students don't feel like successful readers.

But when the reading experience plays to their strengths and learning styles, it builds their confidence. This makes my students want to continue reading. Help make my students lifelong readers!
