Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 11th and 12th graders are amazing! Many are striving to be the first in their families to attend college and several are English Language Learners whose families have immigrated to New York City. Our school, which opened in 2004, is an urban public school that offers grades 6-12 in a low-income area of one of the outer boroughs. Our school's mission is to provide the community with the best public school education possible. We want all students to graduate college or career ready, and this cannot be possible without making learning relevant to their passions and goals and giving them tools to broaden their worlds.

My Project

My classroom can be enhanced by speakers almost every day, whether it's to listening to audiobook excerpts, short videos, podcasts, or our daily song during the Brain Starter. But this has been interrupted lately because our old classroom speakers have broken. Additionally, we need a more portable speaker so it can be used in multiple classrooms.

Recently, the use of speakers has been especially helpful as we read Zora Neal Hurston's classic novel Their Eyes Were Watching God.

The book is known for the voice of its dialogue, written with plenty of character and beauty in the Southern vernacular its characters would have used. To hear a professional actor read Hurston's words via the audiobook has added to the experience of reading the book, making it come alive for the students.

With a new Bose speaker with bluetooth technology, the transportation of speakers between my two classrooms would be a lot easier. It's small, has no wires, and can connect to any device with bluetooth. This would also allow my students to connect their devices for presentations or to share their own media as it applies to class.
