Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

There is no better classroom than the world around us. Place-based education is a method of teaching that connects experiences in the local community to developing knowledge in content areas. I got to see the power of this type of learning last year when we began a study of the birds living in our neighborhood riparian environment, Salt Lake's Jordan River corridor. Every month, students collected data about birds they observed at our site and then studied how birds' structures helped them survive in this environment. They loved walking down to the river and pointing out all the birds they were seeing, but had trouble distinguishing one bird from another.

This is where you come in: giving our students access to a pair of binoculars will allow them to collect more accurate data.

Access to better tools will lead to a better understanding of the living and nonliving interactions we are observing. In addition, the class set of binoculars will live in our outdoor education supplies which can be accessed by all the teachers at our school. Therefore, this project will not only reach the 4th graders in our school, but the entire student body.
