My Project

The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis will be a powerful and enriching addition to my classroom, offering my students the chance to explore themes of resilience, courage, and global awareness. Set in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime, the story of Parvana, a young girl who must disguise herself as a boy to support her family, provides an opportunity for deep discussions about gender roles, survival, and human rights. This novel not only engages students with an important and relatable story, but it also helps them develop empathy for children living in conflict zones and understand the challenges others face in different parts of the world.

The goal of this project is to provide my students with access to a book that will encourage both personal and academic growth.

By reading The Breadwinner, students will enhance their critical thinking and analytical skills as they analyze the complex characters and themes of the novel. The specific items from this project, such as classroom copies of the book and related resources, will make a significant difference in their learning by allowing them to engage with the text in a meaningful way.

Ultimately, this project aims to help students understand the importance of perseverance and empathy while deepening their awareness of the world around them. By reading The Breadwinner, students will gain a sense of the struggles children face in war-torn regions, encouraging them to reflect on their own privileges and responsibilities. I hope this project will inspire my students to think critically, act compassionately, and develop a stronger sense of global citizenship.
