My students need four sets of class novels, a science experiment book, and various other classroom supplies (an electric pencil sharpener, pens, magnets, etc.).
My students yearn for occasions read something enlightening, to listen, to speak, to write, to create... I strive to make every lesson plan I write to include each of these. I look for enrichment materials to challenge my students and foster a love of learning.
I teach 33, GATE identified, brilliant 6th graders.
My exceptional students impress me daily with incredible creative writing pieces, research reports, narratives, science projects, oral presentations, and so much more. They also compete on our debate team, volunteer to work in the front office and library, are members of Student Council, Green Team, Mathletes, and participate in the many other non-academic extra-curricular activities that our school has to offer. I am lucky to be working with such extraordinary youngsters.
The other 600+ students at our school (two of them are my daughters) are either GATE identified or advanced learners. Because we are not a Title 1 school, we do not receive extra funding from our district. We rely on parent donations, PTO fund raisers, and charitable community members/organizations to help us provide enrichment opportunities for our unique population of kids. Thank you for taking the time to read about us!
My Project
The curriculum provided to me by my school district does not meet the needs of my gifted and talented (GATE) students. The novels that I hope to receive will be engaging and challenging for my kids. We will be exposed to new vocabulary words and concepts, write extensively in our Response to Literature notebooks, have meaningful discussions, and complete other critical-thinking activities that meet the Common Core standards and engross my students.
We will use the science experiment book to supplement our current science textbook. My students will appreciate the hands-on approach.
I also need a few other miscellaneous classroom supplies such as an electric pencil sharpener, pens, magnets, and organization files. These are a few staples that every classroom needs.
I'm excited to use the book of science experiments.
My vision is to have a "Scientist of the Week" choose an experiment, summarize it using the scientific method, don a lab coat and goggles on Friday and conduct the experiment with the rest of the class (leading them to construct their own hypothesis along the way). I think it will be a fun, unique way to teach science and give every student a chance to take on a leadership position.
Thank you for your consideration!
