Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are some of the most amazing children I have had the pleasure to meet, teach and have in my life.

Our school is a Title 1 school which serves children with special needs in grades 6-8.

My class consists of 12 students with intellectual, learning, emotional and multiple disabilities. Many of the children come from ethnically diverse families whose parents primarily speak their native language. Many of my students are bilingual, which is very impressive to me! Reading is challenging for most, yet our school does not have a library; each teacher needs to develop their own classroom library with limited resources.

The children in my class read at many different levels. The reading levels range from about Pre-K to a 3rd grade level. The goal for our students is for them to become independent adults. Reading will help them achieve this goal. My students are always willing to give each task their best. They have the love of learning and enjoy coming to school each day!

My Project

Students need to be engaged in learning. Leveled books can engage and give ownership to learning. My students will gain self-esteem and have fun from reading. They will develop vocabulary, spelling and visual skills by spending time with books.

Since our school does not offer our students a library please help us build our classroom library.

This would be a great beginning for children to gain independence in their lives. As adults they will need to be able to read important documents, labels, survival signs and symbols; even be able to take a drivers license exam. These beginner leveled readers will help them achieve many feats in their lives. Thank you!
