Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them." Marcus Aurelius. Learning about awe will help my students feel increased life satisfaction, a sense of time slowing down or standing still, and a greater desire to help others.

My students are newly arrived immigrants from over 35 countries around the world.

They have all experienced a profound change in their lives, leaving their home countries for a life in New York. My school is a warm, welcoming place, and my students are remarkable people, brave and wise beyond their years. Living in a new urban environment overrun with technology, many have little knowledge of how to access green spaces. They don't realize that they need access to nature and a break from their cell phones in order to tap into their curiosity, decrease their stress, and appreciate the wonders of life.

My Project

Researchers at UC Berkeley define awe as "the feeling we get in the presence of something larger than ourselves that challenges our usual way of seeing the world", including the first flowers of spring! To truly experience the benefits of awe, we will visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, where we will go on an awe walk and use the grant materials to create create watercolor paintings. My students need highlighters, watercolor paints, paper and brushes for our visit to the Botanic Garden where we'll create paintings for our nature journals. This experience will help generate feelings of awe in my students. Awe involves feeling interconnected with others and broadening our horizons, where everyday concerns tend to feel less overwhelming €"as we get smaller, so do they.

Research suggests that awe has numerous psychological benefits, including increased life satisfaction, a sense of time slowing down, a desire to help others, greater levels of happiness, sufficiency, peace, contentment, less stress, more connections to their peers and humanity in general.

These benefits are long lasting and will carry into my students' outside lives. The experience of awe has the potential to turn students’ lives in a new direction, opening their hearts and minds!
