This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I love books, and the students in book club do too. Finding the perfect book for all of us to read together can be a challenge.

The students in my classes are smart, funny, compassionate and definitely active.

Sometimes, getting them to focus on reading is a challenge. To help students remain engaged in school, we use book club as a way not only to promote reading, but also to create a sense of community and belonging. Since our students generally do not come from "print-rich" homes, the only books they encounter are the ones that are taught in the classroom. While we English teachers love a challenging read or a classic, for our students this often just encourages them to believe that reading is a chore.

My Project

To help develop the reading bug, we would like the students to have access to exciting, fun, current Young Adult books that they can read as a group. They would have all of the joys of book discussions without the stress of trying to untangle a classic.

By getting students to find any book they are into, they are more likely to keep reading, to keep trying to find that same sense of wonder and excitement.

Not all books need to be "oatmeal books," the ones we read because they are good for us. The light, fun and quick books will increase my students' sense of success and encourage them to look for the next title they want to read.
