This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is a safe haven for the students. We are in a suburban district that is experiencing a lot of turmoil. The building is falling apart, literally. I try to get the students that enter my room to love learning. Using this novel, is one way I achieve that.

Most of my students are minorities who have come from other countries for a better life.

Most of them get free or reduced meals at school. This is where they see the light, meaning a way to break out of the poverty cycle and make a better life for themselves and their families. Our school is in a district that is experiencing a lot of turmoil. The state has sent in a monitor to oversee some things. The buildings are falling apart. These students deserve more!

My Project

Perks of Being a Wallflower is a novel about a boy in high school is coming of age. He is trying to find where he fits in in the world. The students I teach are in the same position. They are trying to find their place in society. They can connect with Charlie. They will learn that how they are feeling is common with being a teenager.

The donations will help improve my classroom by giving the students the physical book to read.

Currently I have photocopies of the novel with a lot of the pages poorly copied. Donations will also show the students that they are important and that people care about them.
