Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

The great mystery of my public elementary classroom where my first through third grade students with disabilities learn, is where do all the pencils go? The only answer we can come up with is that the pencil monster eats them when we are not in the room. I buy packs of pencils that disappear within days. One of the greatest obstacles my students face each day is having the basic supplies, such as pencils and notebooks, with which to complete their assignments. Even when a student is able to keep their pencils safe from the pencil monster, a broken or insufficient pencil sharpener becomes the obstacle. Then even when a sharp pencil is obtained, a notebook in which to record their learning, such as responding to how a character faces a problem in the story, is nowhere to be found. Many of my students will come the first week of school with sufficient supplies, but for whatever reason, their parents do not provide them with the supplies they need through out the year despite frequent requests from me. The solution to this obstacle that my students face every day is to provide them with the basic tools that will help them learn. Some of the resources my students need are pencils, a reliable pencil sharpener, pens to revise and edit their pieces for writing, dry erase markers that are used by the students to give quick responses to questions during math lessons, and notebooks in which students record their thinking and understanding of concepts I am teaching them. My students, deprived of even basic things such as pencils and notebooks, appreciate the littlest things. Their faces light up when I give them even a plain notebook or a pen with which to edit their story. You can help provide the basic foundation for their learning by providing these supplies. You'll also help them overcome the obstacle of the pencil monster.
