The Peaceful Patio- an Alternative to Regular Recess

My students need these waterproof seats and toys like a marble run set to enjoy an alternative recess in the Pacific Northwest. These supplies will make it possible to play on our school's "Peaceful Patio" even when it's drizzling outside.

My Students

My students are a wonderful mix of smart, kind, funny, energetic and challenging. Each and every one of them is on the complicated journey of growing up, and are likely to experience some social turmoil along the way. I enjoy being a counselor because I get to help children navigate this journey and learn the social-emotional skills they need to thrive and be happy. My goal is to reach the kiddos who need extra coaching and mentorship in a calm recess environment.

My Project

The idea of starting a Peaceful Patio came to me when I noticed that about 10% of children at my school were struggling to find friends, and/or social success at recess. Not every child enjoys physical activities such as Tag, Soccer, Monkey-bars, etc, and others have a hard time in large, crowded spaces with a lot of noise and commotion. Therefore, these materials will help the 'Peaceful Patio" (a smaller, quieter space at the back of our school), become a comfortable place to play board games, read, draw and still be outside at recess. The kids will be able to take the foam seats and spread out on the patio chairs and benches to talk and play together. They will be able to use the plastic clipboards for writing and drawing, and the waterproof Uno cards will hold up well in our damp Seattle climate. The marble works will also do well if they get wet, and the checkerboard rugs are rugged and machine washable. All of these toys provide a quieter and calmer recess environment, which will set help more students be successful.
