This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students will be engaging in a mock trial for their argumentative unit. They will be reading "The Outsiders" and then debating whether or not Johnny Cade is innocent in a mock trial against one of their peers. My goal is to help students see both sides of an argument and to help them understand how everything is not always black and white. My students are special because, like Johnny Cade, they come from low socio-economic backgrounds, but are able to use their own life experiences to see the world through different lenses. The items I am requesting will help students immerse themselves into their role as we turn out classroom into a courtroom, and they present their arguments not as students, but as lawyers who are advocating from their client. English Language Arts is not only about reading and writing, but also about becoming a strong speaker who speaks with conviction. I believe that making their final project feel real will help them to understand the power of speech and of argument.
