My Students

Our students have made mistakes in their past. They attend our transfer high school because they have fallen behind in their credit accumulation and need an accelerated and alternative path to get caught up and graduate on time.

Many of our students have been shuffled through systems their whole lives.

The prison system, the foster care system, and dysfunctional urban school systems have been the settings of their personal narratives. As a result, many struggle with reading, and it is a challenge to find literature that engages their attention and relates to their experiences.

My Project

The Other Wes Moore is a memoir that examines the choices we make, the circumstances we encounter, and how these factors affect our lives. The memoir reports on two parallel, yet wildly different lives, connected by a name that the author sees in the newspaper and recognizes as his own. "The other Wes Moore" was on trial for murder and robbery and the author decided to examine the circumstances that led his fellow Wes Moore to prison, while he was able to successfully uplift himself through the ranks of the army. The book raises important thematic questions about choices, our surroundings and the circumstances which shape our lives.

My students have a lot to learn from this novel, both about literature and about their own lives and the power they have to shape their own destiny.

We will combine our reading of the novel with in-depth analysis of the essential questions it asks about fate, choices and circumstance. Students will complete creative non-fiction essays and reflect on the power of choices and circumstance in their own lives. This unit will be an eye-opening, reflective, and rewarding learning experience.
