My Students

"One Simple Rule: If it came from a plant, eat it. If it is made in a plant, don't." - Michael Pollan. This simple quote will be used to introduce my students to the not so simple world of food production, distribution and marketing in America and how it impacts their lives.

Our school is an urban, neighborhood school serving all students that live within our attendance boundaries.

The administration, parents and teachers understand the importance of bringing the outside world into our building while also providing students with appropriate academic challenges, setting all students up for future success. My students are athletes, social butterflies and critical thinkers. They are on the cusp of becoming young adults, making decisions that will impact the rest of their lives. They love to read nonfiction, particularly when it relates to their world.

My Project

My students will use individual copies of "The Omnivore's Dilemma" to read, annotate and discuss this complex text. The book follows Michael Pollan as he explores four American food chains. We will read about each chain, discuss its pros and cons, analyze how it impacts our health, the environment and local and global economies. My students will use this text to see beyond their classroom and community into a global view of food marketing, production and consumption.

Reading this text will not only help my students here and now, but will leave a lasting impression on them for years to come.
