My colleagues and I teach at a Title I school in West Harlem. Many of the students receive free lunch. Our students come from various cultural backgrounds and have various learning needs. Hugo Newman’s third grade consists of two general education classes and a Spanish Dual Language program, where students receive instruction in English and Spanish. All of our 3rd graders will benefit from this amazing opportunity to travel and explore what interests them.
Our students are curious and love a good adventure!
My Project
As a culminating project in our partnership with Maritime, students have the opportunity to travel and visit the Maritime Aquarium in Connecticut!
Many of our students have not traveled very far beyond their neighborhood and are excited to explore the world outside of New York City!
We are fortunate enough to be able to continue our third grade partnership with the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT. The aquarium has already visited our classrooms to conduct squid dissections in our classrooms with students earlier this year. They will also be taking them on a trip to Orchard Beach, during which the students will explore the coastline, and the animals that have amazing adaptations that live there.
They will go on a Marine Life Study Cruise boat and explore the creatures that live in Long Island Sound. They will also be able to touch sharks, rays, and jellyfish in the interactive exhibits. Last year’s student loved the experience and we know our current students will enjoy it as well! They cannot wait to see what adventures and amazing experiences await them there!
