My Students

Our middle school classroom is full of energy and independent thinkers.

These students love looking at the next day and discovering where the math world will take them. The students are energetic middle schoolers in grade 6 through 8 with a passion for learning. The students come from a high poverty area in rural eastern Iowa. Many of our students are unable to afford common school supplies, including scientific calculators. This has been a struggle for many students, and it is my wish to provide calculators for them so they may be successful in school.

My Project

Our math concepts are becoming very advanced and cover some abstract and complex mathematical thinking requiring the use of scientific calculators. Some of these concepts include exponents, scientific notation, and square roots. Having a calculator available for each student will allow them to be successful in understanding many of these concepts. Many of these students, coming from struggling backgrounds, also struggle with feeling confident in the work they do. These calculators, though seemingly small, can help my students see their successes and advancements in mathematics.

My students struggle daily with mathematics and other studies, but also with the opportunity to have materials available to them.

In the middle school, only a small percentage of students are able to afford school supplies. It is my hope to provide these resources so they can become successful scholars in their math studies.
