This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
I am the teacher of some amazing students here in Philadelphia. They are curious and inquisitive about the world around them. One way to continue to ignite this curiosity is through literacy. As a second grade class, we are on the cusp of the next stage in reading. Some students are excited about chapter books, but do not have access to them. Other students are intimidated by chapter books and shy away. In this campaign, I am asking for the opportunity to bring long-form story reading to my classroom.
The first step is always getting BOOKS IN HANDS!
With the books selected in this campaign, students will have the opportunity to see themselves, see others, and engage in the classics! As a class, we will use the first book for a class wide book club. The second book selected will provide the basis of basic literacy study (like settings, plots, and characters). The last two books selected will be used as book reports!
By the end of this year, it is not only my hope for the students to read four novels, complete two book reports, and participate in one book club; but it is my hope that they will also develop a love of reading that will carry them throughout their academic careers.
