This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school reside in one of the poorest congressional districts in the United States.

When the last bell of the school day rings at 3:04 pm, most students head to a part-time job (whose income helps to put food on the table) in the neighborhood or home to take care of younger siblings or elderly relatives.

Rarely does this second shift provide the space or time for reading, an activity highly correlated with academic success, higher SAT scores, and greater chance of admission to college. The reading students do in school is critical for paving an avenue to a brighter and more enriching life, making it vital that teachers expose them to a variety of engaging and informative texts. Offering students the opportunity to read The Nazi Hunters by Neal Bascomb will help them develop their vocabularies, build their reading stamina, deepen their knowledge of history, and expand their sense of empathy and justice.

My Project

In "We Didn't Start the Fire," Billy Joel lists some of the most important--and the most notorious--events that occurred in the twentieth century. Nestled in the lyrics is a reference to Adolf Eichmann, the man considered to be the mastermind behind the extermination of six million Jews during the Holocaust.

In history classes, students learn about the infamous Adolf Hitler, but what about the other infamous Adolf?

Eichmann--and his role in the Holocaust--is addressed in stark and haunting detail in Neal Bascomb's The Nazi Hunters. Receiving 15 copies of the book will enable me to conduct a unit on this lesser known, yet no less important, facet of World War II and its aftermath so that my students can deepen their knowledge of history--and their belief that justice prevails. And when we've finished reading the book, we'll listen to Billy Joel's song, catching the passing reference before discussing why Eichmann and his actions must not be forgotten in the twenty-first century.
