My Students

Many of my students are struggling readers and some are English language learners. Many are below grade level in their reading levels and need more beginning chapter books. My goal is for them to improve their reading and foster a love of reading.

My school is in a progressively growing rural community with total enrollment in Pre-K through 5th grade of a little over 550 students.

The town population is approximately 70,000, with 17 elementary schools in the district. The diversity at our school comes from the economic levels with approximately 45% of our students receiving free or reduced rate lunches. I teach in a self-contained second grade classroom. I have twenty-five students.

My Project

My students are really beginning to love reading this year. They are very into mystery series and are begging for some of the new second grade leveled mystery series. This collection of Nancy Drew books will excite and expire my students to jump into the mystery genre and broaden their love of reading. As a second grader, it is important to find a series or author that makes you love reading and not want to put the book down. I try to instill in my students how important reading is and compete for their attention against all the games and technology that is available to them today.
