My Students

The students at my Title I school are eager kids that want to show the world their music abilities and support their reading abilities. They come to music class ready to dance, sing and learn whatever musical element I want them to know. The students know that some weeks we will explore books and apply musical elements to the text while we are reading.

I not only want to expose my students to the best of the music world, I also want them to experience a print rich environment in my classroom.

My students need as many reading resources available to them as possible.

I teach at a school where the students want to experience all that that is available to them. I teach at a Title 1 school where all of the children receive free breakfast and free lunch. There are many students at my school that receive back packs of food to take home over the weekend and we also have a food pantry at our school to benefit our families once a month.

Even with all the challenges that the students experience, the students come to music class eager to learn.

My Project

The students at my school are working on improving their reading abilities. I have structured the music program to include as much literacy as possible into my lessons. I find books to read to the students and perform them in ways that the students get excited to read. I also break the students up into groups and have them read stories to one another or listen to a book on CD.

I want to do more to expose my students to more literature in my classroom.

I am in need of new books in my classroom that I can perform to my students, have them read in small groups to each other or have them listen to books on CD.

This project will help me create more groups with the students by giving them different books to read each week. This project will help enhance the literacy library in the music room and help support the children in my school with their reading abilities.
