I teach middle school in Humble, TX, which is an urban/suburban area just north of Houston. My students are very diverse and full of energy. We are in our second year of our program teaching kids how to use their voice through music and the visual arts. We provide a space for kids to come and express themselves and learn how to work together and uplift each other.
The program focuses on allowing students to use the arts to learn more about themselves and take a sense of pride in what they do every day.
We meet two days a week after school and teach personal development and add value that helps to connect each student to the world all through the arts. We have artists, singers, photographers, music producers, and writers. They are learning to tell their stories in an authentic way.
The Music and Arts Collective provides students with a nontraditional place to express their talents and learn valuable personal development skills in the process.
Our project this year is Speak Your Truth!
Students are tasked with developing a song or spoken word poem and video, a series of photographs, or a set of original art pieces, that represents their most authentic self. All of this leading up to an end of the year showcase where they will perform for their family and friends and display their artwork and silent auction.
The Slate 2+, The Slate 2+ The Tip, Fabriano Studio Mixed Media Fat Pad, and the Prismacolor Premier Double-Ended Art Marker Set will help to expand our art program and allow our students to explore greater options with their artwork.
With the addition of the Amazon Basics Tripod Boom Microphone Stand, PreSonus Audio Box 96 Studio Plus Recording Kit with Studio One Software, and the TONOR Microphone Isolation Shield students will have the opportunity to learn how to record themselves and promote the music and poetry they create. The Canon EOS 4000D / Rebel T100 DSLR Camera will help us to document the experiences through photos and videos.
Many of our students are not the most likely to create and definitely not together. We are excited about the progress the kids are making in their projects and in the development of collaborative ideas. Thank you in advance for your support!
