My Students

I remember the first time I started working at our center like it was yesterday remember working with a very challenging student from whom I learned a lot of what I know today about students with severe disabilities. Since then I felt in love with the profession.

Our students are in desperate need of a variety of stimulating experiences that will allow them to become more aware of their environment and at the same time help them reach their maximum potential through practice, repetition, imitation and exposure to a variety of functional tasks.

To achieve this goal and help them improve in the different functional areas of my instructional program the use of technology is essential. Therefore, I am requesting a tablet and a projector. These devices will provide access to sufficient age-appropriate reading materials, audiovisual stimuli, etc. Our students are the most severe in public schools: (Multiple Disabilities- Severe MDS) None of my 10 students is able to speak or walk independently if at all. They are very low functioning cognitively and physically speaking, most of them with severe developmental delays, quadriplegia and unable to produce speech. Consequently, they rely heavily on the teacher and assistants to be able to perform in act

My Project

A tablet will be a great tool to our program in that, it will provide a variety of audio and visual stimuli for my students; it will allow me to download a variety of software applications. Some of these applications are very inexpensive and I will be able to purchase them for my students. In addition, such applications are important for the teacher to get ideas and develop/or connect them to lesson plans and activities appropriate for students. For example, a tablet can be connected to a projector to display large colorful images related to the different functional areas (Reading, Math, Communication, Health etc.) This includes, personal hygiene, visual recipes for cooking, puzzles, art, etc., most of them with pictures, graphics, video, text, music and sound already incorporated. This is a tremendous advantage over the ordinary visuals that I have used in the past. The biggest problem with these is the high cost of ink, especially the one in color.

Another advantage of the tablet is its portability.

It is a great resource to work with students individually (one-on-one) this allows the teacher to differentiate each student’s educational needs providing the student with the appropriate activity, task etc. The tablet can also be used to enhance the way I engage my students in ‘Circle Time’ or ‘Interaction Time’. This will allow my students to have access, learn and be exposed to a variety of current daily weather reports, calendar skills etc
