The Movers and the Makers

My students need some science and art centers. We want to build with KNEX and study art of nature with a plant press (and giant checkers is just so cool).

My Students

Kids need experiences. We can pull out books, turn on computers and iPads, and talk until we are blue in the face, but it is the actual hands-on activities that illustrate concepts and cement understanding. My students are amazing 2nd graders who will jump at any opportunity to build and create!

This project is all about Empowering Students Through Art and Science.

My school district has a science curriculum that covers most of the state standards. We are lucky enough to have artists visiting our school this year. So what I want to do is set up multiple MakerSpaces where kids can add to their learning by creating and exploring. With these high interest materials the kids will be able to co-operate and experiment, plan and build, and finally share out their work. Instead of the regular structure and expected outcomes, they will be allowed more time for investigations and discovery.

My Project

The materials for this project are things that I have wanted in my classroom for years. The two KNEX sets build upon one another. The smaller kit is a simpler set that will serve as an introduction to the use of the materials and support the larger kit. Simple machines are present at most levels of our science instruction but also in most days of our lives. A fundamental understanding of how they work will always be a benefit. It will also provide opportunities to make their own creations. The plant pressing and photo paper kits will give the students a chance do some work in nature and then bring it back to the classroom for closer study. We have some great equipment for looking at specimens and with these supplies we can now have a way to preserve them and to make them into art. I am imagining collecting, identifying, pressing, and then transforming them into cards, bookmarks, or who knows. And then there is giant checkers. What can I say? Giant checkers will make GIANT FUN!

These materials are guaranteed to be engaging.

They are fun but require increasing amounts of focus to get to the next level. By scaffolding interest and ability I can push students' learning. This can happen but it is up to donors to make it possible. Besides the learning that will happen in class it creates the opportunity for so much more. Once the students love the learning they will love school. Positive experiences make positive feelings. Help my kids find early success in school.
