My Students

It is a small rural school district located in the northernmost reaches of New York State. Nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks, and on the shore of the Saint Lawrence, as well as the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation. Thanks to Title VII and the Johnson O’Malley federally-funded programs, our school district provides educational enrichment programming for its Mohawk student population, which comprises 63 percent of the total school enrollment.

Art class is a place in school where they can be creative, problem solve and usually where their academic levels are not so obvious.

Those students who's reading, writing, or math skills are weak can thrive in art class. By doing many creative art lessons, I am hopeful to inspire them and give them a reason to come to school.

My Project

The middle school students LOVE art class and I want to provide them a well rounded creative learning experience. The 8th grade Studio Art class has 22 students who meet every day for the entire year. They are hand selected, very creative, and talented students! 6th grade and 7th grade, which is more than 200 students, have art every day for a semester with a rotating schedule. I strive to provide them with lessons that will engage and challenge them. Many of these supplies run out and I have to purchase more out of my pocket.

These supplies cost a lot of money, of which our art budget has already been used up for this coming year.

We have many talented students who inspire me everyday! It's that time in the year where I try and stretch my art budget for next year. As you may have guessed I couldn't buy everything so fingers crossed I can have another successful year of donations.

The Sharpies are used on the 6th grade Radial Symmetry Mandalas and Keith Haring Figure Drawings, as well as, the 7th grade Spirit Animal Drawings and Design Tube Sculptures. The Scotch tape and hot glue sticks are used on the 8th grade Paper Mache Sculptures. The watercolors and paintbrushes are for the 6th grade landscape paintings and the 8th grade flower paintings. Our students are always looking for grey color pencils which don't usually come in the usual color pencil sets so these additional ones will be very helpful. The book "Learner-Directed Classroom", has a teaching framework for understanding student-directed learning which I want to implement with 8th grade Studio Art.
