This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember being in school and not being able to read your favorite books? Multiply this feeling by 24 and you will know what its like to teach my third graders. Even with a brand new reading program with wonderful reading stories my students are not able to read these stories fluently.

We are an inner-city school composed of eighty-five percent Latino and twenty-five percent African-American.

Currently ninety-five percent of our students qualify for the free lunch program. Thirty-five percent of our school population receives English Language Development for an hour each day.

My Project

If I had at least four to five laptops and a printer in my room, my students could be able to read books on-line and monitor their own reading. This would help both their reading fluency and comprehension. They would be able to do this on their own which would in turn give them a sense of empowerment and encouragement to continue reading more each day. Reading will in turn lead to their success. I am requesting one laptop and one printer to help us get started.

I will use the laptop to enhance my current reading program.

Using technology will give them a sense of empowerment. They will be on par with the students who are able to have computers in their classrooms. this is another way to close the achievement gap.
