My Students

A typical day in my classroom revolves around reading and writing, but we start the day with meditation and have frequent community-building activities. I have a project-based approach to learning, and the kids love to work collaboratively!

My school is a dual-language Mandarin and English school; our population is primarily Asian, and most of our students qualify for free lunch.

The kids work really hard, especially at the middle-school level, competing to earn spots in an NYC specialized high school.

My Project

We are hoping to read the novel together and institute our own No-Name Calling Week, just like the protagonist in the novel. The book is lively and engaging to a variety of readers; I even have the full-cast recording for my struggling readers to listen to! I just don't have enough books.

Due to budget cuts, it has gotten harder and harder to put books in my kids' hands.

We no longer have the resources we once did. This book not only will help my kids with their reading skills, it will also help to underscore the curriculum of empathy that is vital to my practice as a teacher.
