My Project

When students have supportive relationships and opportunities to develop and practice social, emotional, and cognitive skills across many different contexts, academic learning accelerates. I plan on creating a learning environment that respects and values racial diversity while addressing students’ experiences and the historical issues that shape those experiences. I hope to use these journals and activities help students learn about the commonality and diversities in their classroom, community and the world. It is important to have students reflect on their feelings and social well being as they learn about the various racial and social events that effect them directly. Daily activities in the journal, writing prompts, and sorting activities will ensure students are learning the skills to properly understand and process the emotions they are feeling.

A student’s perspective or “mindset” can have a huge impact on their academic success, motivation, and future.

I wish to foster an environment where students are not only aware of a growth mindset, but can actively take care of creating it. When students have more of a fixed mindset, they see challenges as risky. With this way of thinking, encountering obstacles or criticism becomes “proof” that they don't have the abilities needed to succeed. When students adopt a growth mindset, they view challenges as ways of progressing toward their desired outcomes. If a student simply believes their brain can grow, they can experience new and different outcomes. As we are learning I hope to foster a positive growth mindset that is rooted in daily activities and journal reflections.
