My Project

My class will read The Martian together! It is an exciting and funny science fiction novel with real applications of chemistry. The main character, Mark, survives while stuck on Mars by using chemistry principles to transform the limited matter available into useful chemicals to survive.

Through an engaging story of science and engineering, students learn that matter is always conserved in chemical reactions - we cannot make water and breathable air out of nothing, but we can transform matter into water and breathable air!

My chemistry students will read The Martian while we learn about conserving atoms in chemical reactions. These novels will increase student engagement in the principles of conservation of matter because of the exciting and hilarious nature of the story. Reading the book will also help students to continue to build literacy skills outside of English class. The story has riveting examples of Mark using limited resources to conduct chemical reactions to recycle his water, create fertilizer and grow plants, remove carbon dioxide from his air, add oxygen to the air, and synthesize additional water. Along the way, Mark makes mistakes, blows things up, and has to figure out what went wrong. His thought process is an excellent illustration of the engineering design process of creating and revising solutions to big problems.

23% of my students receive special education services, and these students will benefit greatly from more opportunities to engage with reading books outside of their English class.
