My Students

Our school is located in Staten Island, New York. It offers one of the largest International Baccalaureate programs in the tri-state area. Typically 60 percent of our candidates earn the IB diploma with most graduates going on to SUNY level college or private school. This is in a Title I school with an 80 percent graduation rate overall. In five short years, the IB program (which is honors level) has gone from predominantly white to a situation where no racial, ethnic or language group enjoys more than a plurality. This makes for a fun classroom dynamic, where the students learn as much from each other as they do from the daily lesson plan.

All students are learning how to work regular written reflection into their daily academic routine.

All know how to form impromptu teams and use digital tools to share ideas productively. Like many students across the country, they are increasingly confident in asserting "student voice." As an example: I was recently pulled out of and I was able to observe, via online reflection, my classroom self-managing a live "Socratic Seminar" discussion on the recent student walkouts.

My Project

I run a tech-intensive classroom in which many projects are assigned via the online course syllabus and collected via an online survey. I encourage students to borrow devices if needed, and I press them to work on their digital literacy (using HTML links, commenting tools, images and web apps) every day they are in the classroom.

I have a number of devices which I loan to students who don't have their own laptop, but these devices are getting long in the tooth.

Also, the project I have in mind, one which assesses students not only on their content knowledge but also on their ability to self-monitor and work in groups requires at least one laptop for every two students. The requested Chromebooks would guarantee that ratio.

The project in question centers around the challenge of oceanic navigation. Our classroom offers a clear view of New York Harbor and we will be using sextants to measure and estimate distance, plus online tools (GeoGebra, Desmos) to generate accurate maps. Geometry students will share their work via online slideshow. My other class, Theory of Knowledge, will conduct a similar exploration while also investigating the methods used by ancient Polynesians to navigate the Pacific Ocean and the methods modern New Yorkers use to orient themselves in the urban environment. The goal is to create something that applies theoretical knowledge to the "real world" and gives all members of a multi-grade-level cohort a chance to collaborate and compare depth of work.
