Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach reading to a group of students from a low-income community. My students are reading significantly below grade level; however, they have a passion for learning. Despite their passion for learning, their progress have been hampered due to their low reading levels.

Even with numerous obstacles, my students are always eager to attend their reading session with me.

They enjoy my reading lessons, and they are always asking questions. They look forward to their time in the reading room with me.

My Project

I have used a variety of educational games as instructional tools in my reading class. I believe game is important as a powerful learning and instructional tool because it helps my young readers to build their early reading skills. Many of my students enjoy playing games because they learn through playing and at the same time they are actively engaged and having fun.

By playing games, students will learn the letters of the alphabet, new words, and decode a sentence.

These materials will help as enrichment activities to build students' skills in phonological awareness, word recognition, alphabet recognition, rhyming, and phonetic skills.

Reading games help students with their early reading skills and provide additional practices to improve and build letter recognition and sound association. Reading games, such as CVC Words, Rhyming Bingo and 'Sight-Word Seashell Game’ will be used to play word recognition games. While sound association games like "Fishing for Sounds" and "Go Fishing for Words" will be used to teach student the sound of each letter. "Go Fishing for Words" will also be used to help my young readers to practice word recognition and spelling to build their vocabulary and their reading comprehension skills. With these skills, they will develop into avid readers.

Reading games will give my students a multisensory approach to reading. In that, it will help them to incorporate all their senses. This will make my students more engaged in their learning. When my students become fluent readers, it will open the world to them.
