My Students

Our students are from a high-poverty, high crime neighborhood. Many of them struggle with basic needs. For these students, reading is a struggle. However, many of them are so grateful for the little things.

These children have high hopes and dreams; many of them want to become medical professionals.

Their sense of wonder and curiosity of the world around them is astounding; they make me want to become better at what I do so as to help them become the best in their respective fields.

My Project

I am partnering with the fifth grade ELA teacher to teach a PBL unit featuring the book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J. K. Rowling. Students need a class set of 24 copies in order to read the book together.

Students will see that the hero's journey is often difficult, as are their own lives, but that with perseverance and the help of your best friends, success is possible.

By participating in this unit, we hope to teach students that love, friendship, and loyalty will always triumph over hate. We want students to see that no matter how difficult your life is, there are always possibilities. Our students will relate to Harry because of his unfortunate circumstances at the beginning of the story; he is an orphan, he is homeless, his relatives don't treat him well. In addition, once he got to Hogwarts, he still had difficulties with teachers, they will relate to that as well. Most of all, we want to instill a love of reading in our students.
