For kindergarteners, learning begins with the art of dramatic or pretend play. Although dramatic play sounds simple, it introduces young students to real life situations, which, with repeated practice, encourages them to take the skills they have learned in the classroom and apply them to actual life activities. I want my students to have the basic equipment needed for a successful pretend area so that they will throw themselves into learning. I am pleading for individuals to donate four items from Childcraft (a dress up storage unit, plexi-glass mirrors, and a complete kitchen set with dramatic play panels) for my general education classroom of 20 kindergarten students at Public School 146. P.S.146 is a magnet school that brings in students from diverse neighborhoods of Brooklyn, New York. Some of my students come from homes where they do not have the opportunity or tools to engage in dramatic play. This kitchen set will provide my students with endless opportunities to use its furniture. Students will be able to freely manipulate the furniture to create multiple environments from their imagination: subway station, veterinary center, the White House, just to name a few. As students assume roles, imitate characters, and play act, they learn the importance of language; indeed, it helps them to organize and reenact a story or play. This learning process assists students in making connections between spoken and written language, a valuable skill set that will later help them become better readers. Also, when students use a prop (such as a refrigerator) as a surrogate for something else (such as a toll booth), they are engaging in high-level thinking. This will eventually enable them to recognize that numbers represent quantities of objects and that combinations of letters represent the words that they speak, hear, and read. In the pretend area, students are actively experimenting with their social and emotional roles in life. It is here where wonderful learning takes place! During this time, students learn how to take turns, share, take on responsibility, and creatively solve problems. While my kindergarteners assume various roles, they experience what it is like to be someone else and their empathic skills flourish. This helps them to understand the feelings of other students through maturation and cooperative play. In time, my students will raise their self-esteem levels when they discover that they can be anyone in the world with the power of pretend play!
