My Students

Our school is located in the lower east side, New York City, close to Chinatown area. Being provided dual language program at school (English and Mandarin Chinese), our students come from different cultural backgrounds. Among all the students, more than 65% of them are Asian-heritage learners.

Even though the students grew up in New York City, many of them have never been to performances in world-class venues like Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center due to the socioeconomic barriers their families face.

Whenever I asked the question, "Who has been to Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, or Broadway Shows in the past?" I could only see a few hands up (out of 22-30) from each class.

As their music teacher, I am always thinking what I can do to enrich their music learning outside the school.

My Project

It is hard to describe how excited I was when knowing about the opportunity for my students to participate in the interactive concert at Carnegie Hall in May 2019! I immediately signed up the "Musical Explorers" program for my 2nd grade students and "Link Up" program for my 4th grade students.

In addition to the concert, each 2nd grade participant will be getting a student guide from "Musical Explorers" program, which contains different cultural songs and instruments information introduced by six extraordinary New York based musicians.

As for 4th grade students, they will each be getting a recorder as well as a student guide from "Link Up" program, which has a great selection of classical repertoire for learners to move to, to sing with, and to play-along with recorder. They will also be learning about instruments and families of the orchestra.

All participating students look forward to attending the interactive concert and creating music with all the amazing professional musicians in Carnegie Hall in May 2019! I know it will be their life-time memorable musical experience, and I truly hope you can help these young music lovers make this amazing event happen!
