My Students

Our school is a small middle school in lower Manhattan. Students come from all over the city, from a wide variety of neighborhoods, cultural identities, and various economic backgrounds. We are proud to have a diverse school community that values collaboration and different perspectives. Over half of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, about a quarter have an IEP, and 10% are English Language Learners.

Whether students are learning at home or in school, they deserve high-quality instruction that builds independence and inspires a love of science.

Eighth graders, in general, are a unique and wildly loveable bunch, but I think my students are particularly incredible. They are hardworking, innovative, and collaborative. They love the hands-on work of science and unlocking the mysteries of the world around them. Their curiosity knows no bounds! Even during remote learning, a notoriously challenging medium for many, my students rose to the occasion, completing independent inquiry projects and developing thoughtful and creative ways to show what they know. I am so lucky to work in this community of engaged, thoughtful learners.

My Project

I will be teaching my middle school science class remotely until January. I chose these materials to replicate our bustling, vibrant classroom as closely as possible in a remote environment. The methods for in-person and remote learning may be different, but engagement, curiosity, and discovery can be the same.

By donating to this project, you are helping to create a virtual classroom for middle school students that engages them every day in the wonder of science: researching big questions, conducting experiments, and discovering the mysteries of the world around them.

I'm going to use the triple beam balance and glassware to teach students measurement remotely. Some of the materials are for demonstrations that students will observe as part of their inquiry process, like density blocks or Newton's cradle. The books are some student favorites from our class library, and we'll use them for reading and research instruction. Finally, I'm dealing with eighth graders, who have watched enough YouTube to be connoisseurs of video content. The microphone, camera, and laptop stand will increase the quality of our class time together, whether I'm live or recording.

I cannot wait for the day that students can use these materials together in our brick and mortar classroom. But until then, these materials will help middle schoolers succeed as students and scientists in a remote learning environment.
