Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My caseload is made up of thirty wonderful students in grades kindergarten through fifth. The students I work with come from very diverse backgrounds with many different cultures represented. About 90% of the students are English language learners and speak a language other than English at home. Communication is a foundation for daily life; however, many of my students lack the basic skills to express themselves and find daily academic and social tasks challenging. Due to the fact that a significant number of my students are learning English as a second language, often they lack the basic sound-letter correspondence, do not have basic reading skills, have a limited vocabulary and struggle to comprehend information. Additionally, a significant number of students come from low-income households. My students work hard every day, and I am constantly looking for new ways to get them engaged in lessons and expose them to new experiences!

My Project

Many of my students have chosen to receive their speech and language services remotely this school year; which had lead me to adjust my teaching style in order to meet their needs. I am always looking for new ideas to make learning exciting and beneficial for the students that are in school, as well as the students that are at home. I would love to have an Osmo to use during my speech therapy sessions. The Osmo base can be used as a document camera to share engaging resources with students who are learning from home.

Osmo also has activities that address early literacy skills such as letter-sound correspondence, phonics skills, sight words and vocabulary!

These skills are crucial for my students that are learning both at school and at home. The Osmo activities also address motor skills, pragmatic skills and communication skills while encouraging creativity. Using Osmo can help my students practice so many skills and really enhance my therapy during remote learning!
