Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach kindergarten in a low-income, high-need area. My school is a Title I Alabama Reading Initiative School. My school consists of 74% free and reduced lunch and where 42 % of its students come from ethnic backgrounds. My students love love love fairy tales! That is why I am asking for books to support our thematic unit on fairy tales.

Fairy tales are some of my favorite stories. These types of stories were read to me when I was a child and I want to read them and spend time learning and talking about them in my kindergarten classroom. Each year I teach a unit on fairy tales that flows over a few weeks. Fairy tales are great for retelling which is a key component of reading success. They sometimes have repetitive text which allows the students to get involved without actually having to read the stories word for word. These stories are so much fun too, that they are easy for my 5 and 6 year old students to remember. With the great fractured fairy tales that are available today, fairy tales are a great tool for teaching concepts like comparing and contrasting and also for teaching about setting and characters.

I would love to have a variety of proper books to teach with and use while teaching my kindergarten kids about fairy tales. That is where I need your help. I am requesting 15 different fairy tale books that I can no doubt use. These books will provide me with several different fairy tales and different version of the classics to use for the things mentioned above.

Your help will ensure that my students develop a love for these all-time favorite past time stories. Your donation will give us an excellent selection of fairy tales that my students can learn so much from! Thanks for making a difference in kid's lives!
