My biggest fear is one day I will walk into the school and find out I have lost one of my sweet students. I teach inner city students in Richmond, Virginia. The school sits in the middle of four city projects; on one side of the school is Oakwood Confederate Cemetery it covers 60 acres of land; on the other side is Richmond Juvenile Detention Center. All of the students that attend my school come from disadvantaged backgrounds and receive public assistance. I had to stop and ask myself how can I help my students grow to love literature? When many have deficits and trauma that hinder their learning.
Our school is 100% free breakfast, lunch, and many of the students receive bags of food to take home over the weekend.
During the summer when school is not in session there are locations in each project where students receive their breakfast, lunch, as well as dinner. The students from my school face many different hardships that as an adult we would not want to endure, let alone have to deal with on a daily basis.
When looking into the face of my students I see myself looking back.
This project will enable students the opportunity of using their imaginations to bring any book alive for them. Many of the students have a hard time with their imagination.
