Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a title 1 school in New York City where 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. My school's population is made up of different nationalities and races; such as African American, Hispanic, Asian and White. My class is know as ICT (inclusive co-teaching) This means that I teach students with special needs along with students in the general education population. My students enjoy the time they share.

In Student Council we are leading a diversity team where we plan to build a school community of understanding, value, and praise of differences.

I plan for my students to share the experiences that they relate to and share these experiences with their teachers and classmates during our diversity meeting and performances. This will help my student learn acceptance, differences and change skills as well as sharing and speaking skills. I would like for my students to master the art and or skill of equity. Where each student is valued not only by their presence but, also by the contributions they make by retelling in their own words what they have learned from their books.

My Project

Equality is a major part of our lives. As we listen to what is going on in the world. I would like to start with my Student Council and create a diversity team. We will read the book "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas who tells a story of diversity and how we can handle it.

Diversity is understanding how I can communicate with someone who does not live in the neighborhood, go to the schools, or share the values my students share.

This project will open my student's eyes to being honest with themselves so they can be open and honest with people they will have to share this world with.
