This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am an 8th grade ELA teacher in Alabama. I have 168 students and we have limited resources. We are English language learners, therefore books are so important, however since we are in an impoverished urban area we do not have access to many resources. My students are interested in books and they want to improve their reading skills and knowledge. Their passion for important world issues is inspiring and what better way to learn and grow than through reading!
My Project
The set of classroom books will allow my students to understand real life issues. The book will help them improve their ELA skills as well as help them become law abiding citizens. We took a class vote and this was the book the students wanted to read. With these books, the students will be able to take control of their education and be I charge of their learning. Starting to have a sense of ownership and accountability. Also, this book is based on real-life experiences which most of my students can relate to, therefore, making them even more excited about this book!
