I work in a Title 1 school where my kids don't have access to many things we take for granted, both in and out of the classroom.
I have spent countless hours researching the right books for our room library, creating high-interest lesson plans, and even making a fool of myself to keep them engaged.
My kids live in the type of neighborhood where just making it through the day is an achievement (think Freedom Writers for the best example). Going to the library isn't exactly a priority in their lives, so they've never gotten the opportunity to discover books they love, ones they can relate to, and the stories they can step inside of and live out in someone else's shoes. These are the moments where my kids will be able to take that time for self-reflection and to envision a world outside of the seemingly hopeless one they live every day.
I stayed in the same high-risk community, but this year made the move from middle school to high school. I felt that I was barely scratching the service in affecting the rest of their lives at the middle school age, and knew that I could have a greater impact in high school. I also received the gift of being able to loop with my 8th graders, which both my students and I have found comfort in.
The number one thing I have noticed in my short time in high school is that these kids do not see the value or purpose of an education.
They see high school as placeholder until they can start working at a minimum wage job and living a life like their parents. The opportunity to inspire them to be first generation high school graduates is quite honestly the motivation for driving to work every day. Creating moments where they can see a different type of future, or a future at all, is my daily reminder of why I teach here. I believe this all begins with reading, and in order to build literate members of our society, they need to be engaged.
Reading books my kids can relate to with minimal effort if paramount, and that is exactly what the gift of this book to my kids will accomplish.
