Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The majority of our students do not have access to green spaces, and have never had the opportunity to garden. Our school garden would change that. It would give students the chance to learn about nature and learn how to garden by giving them hands-on experiences.

We are a title I school in a large urban area with 533 students.

Ninety-eight percent of students receive free or reduced lunch. Our school serves students from eight different homeless shelters and drug-rehab facilities. Thirty-nine percent of our students are English Language Learners. Most of our students live in apartments, and do not have access to green areas or outdoor space. Like most children, our students are curious, eager to learn new things, and open to new experiences. Unfortunately, their economic situations do not always allow them the opportunities afforded to other students. Giving our students a garden will expose them to something new and enhance their educational experience.

My Project

Over the summer the garden committee constructed eight beds (for each grade pre-k through 5th and one for ESE/gifted). We are working on securing donations of soil and plants. Yet we do not have any gloves, or tools. In order for the students to be able to use the garden, they need these resources. The garden committee is working to create lesson plans so the garden can be used across the curriculum. Students will learn about the garden ecosystem, and learn how plants grow from a seed. They will write about what they observe and the changes they see. They will sketch garden scenes in art class, and practice their measurement skills in mathematics. The garden, once it is up and running, will be integrated into all subject areas. Students will learn from hands-on experiences, not just by what they see in a book. Furthermore, they will have the opportunity to be outside, to learn about nature, and to sample the fruits and vegetables that they played a part in growing.

Funding this project will not impact one class.

It will impact the entire school population. All the students will have the opportunity to participate in the garden. The parents at our school do not have the funds to donate these much needed supplies. Providing these supplies for our students will give them the opportunity to learn in a whole new way. It will give them an experience they have never had, and it will change the way they see the natural world.
