My Students

Imagine a community that is overburdened with poverty, crime, and failing schools. My students face this reality daily, yet still remain hopeful for the future.

I would like to teach "The Little Prince" in my classroom this year to encourage overcoming obstacles and to continue to surround them with positivity.

I teach eleventh grade. We are a public school that has struggled academically and is often on needs-improvement lists. We have been steadily making gains in every subject area for the past 2 years, and I believe a great deal of this is due to the increase in reading done both in class and at home. Many of my students are avid readers and thoroughly gain pleasure from picking up a book. However, there is an equal number of students who still detest novels and will try anything possible to find a way out of reading. I'd like to share "The Little Prince" with my students to accommodate both of these groups.

My Project

With about 100 pages, "The Little Prince" is not as intimidating of a novel as others we have read this year. This tiny book contains incredibly deep themes and topics which can be discussed to great lengths by those who LOVE literature in my room. "The Little Prince" also contains symbols, imagery, figurative language, and more literary devices which can be used for insightful reading and thoughtful analysis.

Please help my students experience a piece of literature that is so essential to character development.

I hope by reading this novel together we will be able to examine issues and viewpoints that they may not have been able to fully explore in the past.
