My Students

In my specialized preschool program I have students with many different learning abilities. Most of my students have speech language needs and are slowly gaining independent skills.

Hearing a book read on tape can help students see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way.

It helps a child focus on the sounds of the words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Listening to books can also give my students an important introduction to listening, a skill that they must master in order to learn to read. I have a happy group of preschoolers this year who are excited to bring stories and activities to life. We are trying to incorporate more technology into their day naturally, so they are prepared for typically developing classrooms, full of technology and independent learners.

My Project

In my classroom the children receive direct instruction and large group activities as well as structured learning center activities. I currently have a few books on CD, but do not have age appropriate devices for my current level of students, to access independently. Almost daily students will have access to the listening center as a suggested learning activity so that they can enjoy stories being read to them without the support of additional staff. When children are unable to read they often request that a story be read to them. This will give them the opportunity to begin exploring books on their own.

I am excited to provide the students in my program access to listening.

The skills they will develop from this experience, at this daily center are going to help them throughout their schooling. Developing listening skills, the ability to follow along with cues, to hear fluent language of a story being read, and developing a self created love for books will help them read.
